Period Poverty Awareness Week is May 24-30, 2021
COLUMBUS, OHIO—The Period Pantry Project announces Period Poverty Awareness Week from May 24-30th. “Period poverty” is a lack of access to products such as pads and tampons. The Period Pantry Project is a local non-profit whose purpose is to provide menstrual products to anyone in the Central Ohio region who may need them. During the Period Poverty Awareness Week, the Period Pantry Project will be running a donation drive for product and financial donations. The Period Pantry Project will also be partnering with a number of organizations to distribute period products during that week to spread awareness of period poverty and demonstrate the level of need for period products in our community.
Did you know that 1 in 4 women struggled to purchase period products in the last year because of a lack of income? 1 in 5 women reported missing work, school or other important commitments because of a lack of access to period supplies. Unfortunately, public assistance programs such as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or the Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program cannot be used to purchase period supplies. In the past year, The Period Pantry Project has served over 1,500 individuals and distributed over 30,000 period products.
The Period Pantry Project is a Columbus-based registered 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to provide a reliable source of menstrual products to anyone in the Central Ohio region in need. We fulfill this mission by direct service to those in need through no-contact delivery, and also by partnering with local community organizations. Some of our current partners include Center for Healthy Families, LSS Choices for Victims of Domestic Violence, Star House, Faith Mission, and Riverview International.
